This recipe was first published as part of our Get to know feature on The Suffering Bastard.

30ml Bourbon*
30ml London dry gin
20ml Lime juice*
100ml Ginger beer
2ds Angostura bitters

Shake bourbon, gin, lime juice and bitters over ice; pour into an ice-filled double old-fashioned glass; top with ginger beer. Garnish with slice of cucumber, orange slice and sprig of mint.

*Bourbon: the original recipe called for brandy, not bourbon. If using brandy, use something hefty; say, a brandy de Jerez, instead of cognac.

**Lime juice: The Suffering Bastard is one of those rare drinks where Rose’s lime cordial can be substituted for fresh lime juice. If using Rose’s, reduce to a teaspoon.
