It’s Friday. And this is the best thing I’ve drunk all week

Jet-Black Bird from Bar Trench, Tokyo. By Jethro Kang.

What is it? Bar Trench in Tokyo give you an excuse to have another with their Jet-Black Bird, a whisky cocktail turned health coach with bamboo charcoal powder. The name is inspired by The Beatles song, “Blackbird”.

How is it made? Shake blended whisky, Monkey 47 sloe gin, lemon juice, honey and charcoal powder together, and serve in a cocktail glass. Garnish with a cherry and don’t forget the cage.

How does it taste? The charcoal darkens the cocktail into a shade as black as Trump’s heart and gives the drink a slightly grainy texture, but the action is mostly inside. A commonly used ingredient in Asian cuisine, charcoal is known to cleanse, re-mineralise and speed up your body’s metabolism. If the fruity and aromatic flavours of the drink didn’t put you at ease already, this knowledge surely will.
