50 Best announces the first of two special awards ahead of the ceremony. By Holly Graham.

Singapore’s Sago House is the deserving winner of the Asia’s 50 Best Bars Art of Hospitality Award 2023.

The three year old bar set in a Singaporean shophouse is the recipient of the first of two special awards announced ahead of the Asia’s 50 Best Bars ceremony, to be held in Hong Kong’s Rosewood Hotel on July 18 July. This is the first time the ceremony has been held in Hong Kong, and will be the first “back to normal” post-COVID gathering for Asia’s 50 Best Bars since 2019.

Born in the first throes of the pandemic, Sago House is founded by ex-Monkey Shoulder brand ambassador Jay Gray, Spiffy Dapper (Singapore) owner George C Abhishek, and hospitality powerhouse Desiree Silva (28 HongKong Street and EC Proof), decked out in with upcycled and reused materials.

The homely but rebellious bar welcomes guests with open arms, often greeting visitors with their name and a message scrawled across the bar or table, and serves a menu of six classic serves which are twisted weekly depending on available produce.

“Good hospitality has always been our top priority from day one, so being recognised with this award means everything to us. We want every guest who walks through our doors to feel welcome and comfortable; this goes for our regulars and even those who come in for their first visit. We are excited to celebrate this win, which is not just an award for the Sago House team, but also one for the community we have built, for those who have made our little shophouse bar their home away from home,” says Desiree.
